The Boeing 747 entered service with American Airlines in 1970. These aircraft introduced the age of the "wide-body" airliner and offered a new level of passenger comfort with such amenities as piano lounges and wet bars. American purchased a total of 16 of the giant aircraft. Several of the American 747-100s were eventually converted to carry cargo instead of passengers, and by 1984 American ceased operating the 747-100s in its fleet altogether.

This model represents ship N9661 in its original delivery colors. It was the first 747-100 delivered to American Airlines and the forty-sixth built by Boeing. It had its first flight on May 17, 1970, and was delivered to American June 18, 1970. In 1974 this aircraft was converted into a dedicated air freighter.

The 747-100 had its first flight on February 9, 1969, and entered commercial service in 1970. Boeing delivered 250 of the 747-100s, the last in 1986. Boeing built two versions of the 747-100 passenger airplane, one of which had a higher payload capacity and was known as the -100B. The 747-100 was also available as a short-range (SR) airplane, with a modified body structure to accommodate a greater number of takeoffs and landings. The 747SR model typically was used by airlines on short flights with a high-passenger capacity, as many as 550.
